Ireland is one of the most fossil fuel dependent countries in Europe with huge dependence on oil, coal and gas imports. This is despite having one of the largest wind energy resources in Europe and an abundance of energy hitting our rooftops in the form of solar energy. In light of the recent events in the Ukraine, Europe is now actively looking to eliminate our reliance on imported fossil fuels from Russia.
University College Cork researchers in a MaREI have developed 10 actions households and government can take to reduce Ireland’s use of fossil fuel by 10%. One of these actions is the installation of solar panels on 250K houses in Ireland. This measure alone would reduce Ireland’s dependency on imported oil by 600,000 barrels of oil. This is an acknowledgment of how effective solar panels are in Ireland and how easy it is to install solar panels en masse.
